If you have a Bachelor’s degree in a field other than education and want to become a teacher in South Africa, here’s how you can make that transition:

      1. Complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

      • The PGCE is the most common route for graduates who already hold a degree in another field. This one-year full-time qualification (or two years part-time) prepares you to teach at primary or secondary school levels.
      • Your initial degree should have covered subjects you wish to teach. For example, if you want to teach mathematics, you should have taken enough relevant courses in mathematics during your degree.
      • Institutions like the University of South Africa (UNISA), University of Pretoria, and University of Cape Town offer PGCE programmes.

      2. Choose Your Specialisation

      • PGCE programmes are usually specific to either Foundation Phase (Grade R-3), Intermediate Phase (Grade 4-7), or Senior and Further Education and Training Phase (Grade 7-12). Choose the specialisation based on the age group or grade level you’re interested in teaching.

      3. Register with the South African Council for Educators (SACE)

      • Once you’ve completed your PGCE, you must register with SACE to become a certified teacher in South Africa. This registration is essential for all teaching professionals and involves submitting your qualifications, identity documents, and paying a registration fee.
      • SACE registration ensures you’re qualified to teach and uphold professional standards in education.

      4. Apply for Teaching Positions

      • With your PGCE and SACE registration, you’re now qualified to apply for teaching positions. Government schools, private schools, and some online teaching platforms require certified teachers. Depending on your qualifications, you may teach subjects aligned with your degree.

      5. Consider Further Professional Development

      • You may choose to pursue additional qualifications, such as an Advanced Diploma in Education or even a Master’s in Education, if you want to specialise further or advance your career.

This pathway allows you to leverage your existing degree and become a teacher by obtaining the necessary pedagogical training through the PGCE.
