Line thunderstorms, often called squall lines, differ from general thunderstorms in structure, intensity, and impact. Here’s how they stand out:

      1. Formation and Structure

      • Line Thunderstorms: Form in a line or band that can stretch for hundreds of kilometres. They’re usually associated with a cold front or a convergence line and consist of a series of interconnected thunderstorms.
      • General Thunderstorms: Often isolated and single-celled, forming individually rather than in a continuous line. They can develop in any area with warm, moist air and don’t necessarily form along fronts.

      2. Intensity and Duration

      • Line Thunderstorms: Generally more intense, producing severe weather, including strong winds, heavy rain, and sometimes hail. These thunderstorms often move quickly, affecting a large area within a short time.
      • General Thunderstorms: Typically less intense and shorter in duration. While they can still produce heavy rain and lightning, they usually cover a smaller area and are less likely to produce severe weather.

      3. Wind and Rain Impact

      • Line Thunderstorms: Known for producing strong, gusty winds (known as straight-line winds) as they advance. This can result in wind damage, especially along the leading edge of the storm. Rainfall can also be intense, leading to flash flooding in affected areas.
      • General Thunderstorms: Tend to have more variable winds and rainfall. They may produce heavy rain, but the wind impact is usually less intense and more localized.

      4. Associated Weather Phenomena

      • Line Thunderstorms: Often associated with severe weather events like tornadoes, hailstorms, and lightning. They can also lead to the development of mesoscale convective systems, which are larger storm complexes that persist for several hours.
      • General Thunderstorms: Less likely to produce tornadoes or widespread severe weather, though isolated severe storms can occur.

In summary, line thunderstorms are organised in a continuous, intense band, often bringing severe weather across a wide area, whereas general thunderstorms are usually more isolated, shorter-lived, and less intense.
